Camlok manufacture several types of rail clamps including the MR & MRC multi
rail clamps designed to facilitate the fast and safe bulk handling of rail sections, the RA and RP rail anchor
and rail pulling range, the SCR screwlok and the CR clamp designed to lift single rails of most types. The standard
design of these clamps and grabs can be adapted to provide several additional options.
Recently camlok where asked to design, manufacture and supply nine rail grabs for
export, that where capable of lifting 110m lengths of rail in one operation. The grabs where to be incorporated
into an overhead hoisting system which would be a vital part of a major rail network refurbishment.
The grabs had to be capable of being operated by a single person situated some distance
away. Camlok based the design on their MRC clamp incorporating a solenoid device to open and close the grabs and
an interchangeable comb to suit various sizes of rail. The solenoid enabled one person to simultaneously operate
all the grabs.
During the design process an American client asked Camlok to produce six rail grabs
that where capable of performing similar tasks to the MRC. Due to varying design specifications the solenoid solution
would not be practical so Camlok designed a mechanical solution. Like the solenoid MRC this grab had interchangeable
combs for different sized rails but the grabs could be operated via an automatic mechanical open and close device.
Both adaptations of the MRC rail grab successfully fulfilled the requirements solving two problems with similar
applications.
The CRH hydraulic rail clamp was designed for a client who needed to lift 180m long
single sections of rail. The clamps where suspended along a lifting unit by the hookring. For such long lengths
of rail 30 clamps where required and could simultaneously be opened or closed via the hydraulic system. The design
of the clamp was such that if during a lift pressure was lost or the hydraulic system failed the mechanical linkages
would maintain the clamps grip and the clamp would hold the load safely.
